Pierson Vangorp

Judge Feedback: Story began with a 'definition' lede, which made me think it was going to read like a high school research paper. But, the writer bounced back strong. This was by far the best entry in the category. The writer took an excellent story idea, did the proper research, connected with strong sources and constructed an insightful story. There are portions that could be more concise, which would help the story flow and keep the reader hooked. But this writer certainly has the makings of a journalist and should be encouraged to continue in the craft.
SECOND PLACE
Chris Fulton
Northwestern Michigan College
Judge Feedback: This story wasn't very in-depth, but that could be because of space limitations in the print product. I like how the writer honed in on one main aspect and made good use of that space to illustrate the coach's goal of inspiring his players beyond the game. There is room to grow, but I definitely see potential in this writer for a career in journalism.
THIRD PLACE
Julie Newell
lansing community college
Judge Feedback: A decent little bright that gives an assistant coach a bit of the spotlight. It is heavy on quotes and a bit shy on information, which isn't uncommon when working with limited space. The writer paints a good picture of the head coach-assistant coach relationship and why they work well together. I sense a good foundation here for a future in journalism.
